When a woman wakes up, a random dog is in her bed.

“She was just laying on our pillows, completely content.”

Julie Thorton Johnson had quite the surprise when she woke up earlier this week.

A huge, drowsy dog that neither Johnson nor her husband had ever seen before was curled up next to her in bed.

It took the Johnsons a moment to realize that this pup wasn’t one of their three dogs, who occasionally join them in their bed.

“My husband said, ‘Julie. Whose dog is this?’ I rolled over, and for the first 10 seconds, we were just staring at each other. I said, ‘That’s not our dog,’” Johnson told The Dodo.

But the mysterious dog seemed to be happy enough.

It goes without saying that Johnson and her spouse were initially taken aback by their unexpected new roommate, but it soon became apparent that the dog wasn’t there to cause any problems.

“She was just laying on our pillows, completely content,” Johnson said. “She was just trying to snuggle.”

Johnson, who adores dogs, made the decision to give her a back rub while attempting to solve the dog’s origins.

After a strong storm moved across the neighborhood over night, Johnson thinks the dog got disoriented and was looking for safety. She must have entered through the back door of their house, which the couple had unintentionally left open.

“Dogs are really smart,” Johnson said. “She found an open door and came in it.” Johnson, assuming the dog had owners, took a couple pictures of the fluffy guest and shared them on social media in the hopes that the owner would see them. Indeed,

Soon after, Johnson received a call from the dog’s concerned owner, who lives a few miles away. She found out that the puppy, Nala, had gone missing the day before while out for a walk.

When the storm came, Nala couldn’t find her way home and took refuge with strangers.

“We were a safe place, and she knew it,” Johnson said, adding: “Nala’s moms came right over and picked her up. It was a really happy reunion.”

Nala was back where she belonged, which calmed the fears of her mothers. The Johnsons, meanwhile, are ecstatic that such a nice dog has entered their house and bed.

“They thought that we’d be mad that their dog snuck into our house, but our feelings couldn’t be more opposite,” Johnson said. “Everyone was safe. Nobody was stuck out in the storm. It was a roundabout way to open our hearts to someone else.”

Furthermore, Nala’s unexpected visit resulted in more than simply a humorous tale.
