K-9 Puppy Slept Through the Whole Inauguration Process
|Introducing Brody, a cute 12-week-old chocolate Labrador who recently gained attention on social media for his unusual take on a swearing-in ritual. While most new recruits wave their tails and open their eyes when taking their oaths, Brody chose to grab some attention at his moment of glory.
Brody was formally inducted into the Bristol Police Department in Rhode Island on Monday, April 6, 2020. An important rite of passage, the swearing-in ceremony is a great occasion for any member of the community taking on a new responsibility. But Brody knew what was most important: sleep!
Brody dozed off on the desk during the ceremony, blissfully oblivious to the poignant remarks made by Police Chief Kevin Lynch. While the small dog refilled his batteries, Officer Keith Medeiros filled in for Brody.
The widely shared video, which was broadcast live on the Facebook page of the Bristol Police Department, won over hearts across the globe. Chief Lynch was upbeat about the puppy’s potential influence on the community, despite Brody’s nap. Remarks poured in, praising the exhausted recruit and jokingly telling him to get some rest for the next exploits.
Not just any police puppy, though, Brody is the first Comfort and Therapy dog in the Bristol Police Department’s history. Boonefield Labradors donated the name Brody, which honors both the town (the “B”) and Rhode Island (the “Rody”). After being first considered for bomb-sniffing work, Brody discovered that being a therapy dog would allow him to better connect with the public and the police.
“People are really stressed, especially in law enforcement,” said Officer Medeiros. People smile the moment Brody and I enter the police department. Brody’s presence offers comfort and joy during a time when COVID-19 problems are dominating, demonstrating that sometimes all it takes to make someone smile is a furry companion and a waving tail.
Brody’s tasks go beyond what is usually expected of a K-9. He visits nursing homes, schools, and gives consolation to crime victims as part of his job. Therapy dogs, such as Brody, are an invaluable part of the community because they help people deal with stress, anxiety, and PTSD.
One thing is certain as Brody sets off on his career with the Bristol Police Department: he understands how to strike a balance between work and play. We therefore wish K-9 Brody a career full of goodies, belly rubs, and, of course, calm naps as he continues to win hearts on social media. Dream big, Brody!
